DUCTWORK CLEANING METHODS -
HOW EFFECTIVE ARE THEY?
The HVCA have issued TR/17, a guide to
good practice, but does not recommend any one method in preference to
another. However, a Swedish college conducted an evaluation of the same
cleaning techniques and came up with some interesting findings.
The Vasterbotton College of Health and Caring Sciences
conducted tests under controlled conditions to establish whichcleaning
techniques could be recommended for the College to procure, to clean its own
ventilation systems. After exhaustive tests, the results were as follows:
The report concluded that the skipperball
and air nozzle methods should not be used to clean the ventilation system
and recommended a combination of hand brushing and powered brushing
techniques.
The report confirm the view that dirt needs to be brushed
to dislodge it from duct surfaces and that "modern" air jetting techniques
are of limited affect.
Hygienic Maintenance Limited predominately use the tried
and tested brushing techniques to ensure that a more thorough result is
achieved. Alternative methods can be provided, if requested. To find out
